Weekly Report 08.16 - 08.22

Offensive Player of the Week:
Chun-Hsiu Chen. Chen with .444 for the week with two doubles and a home run. One of the interesting things about Chen's offensive breakthrough this season is his continually improving plate discipline. In low-A he walked 17 times in 240 plate appearances while in high-A he's walked 29 times in 169 plate appearances. Recent scouting reports have also cited his average defense indicating that he will stay at catcher.

Pitcher of the Week:
Chen-Chang Lee. Lee yielded no runs, one hit, and struck out three this week. Lee has had an excellent season although one reason he may not have been promoted this year is because the Indians have several prospects at AA and AAA who have similar statistics as Lee. Nevertheless, given the Indian's poor pitching overall it's probably just a matter of time until Lee gets a major league callup.

Weekly Report 07.26 - 08.01

Offensive Player of the Week:

Chun-Hsiu Chen hit for .444 for the week. After a hot start to the season he's cooled off a bit, but he earned a promotion to high-A a couple weeks ago and has high average and decent power throughout the season. It should be noted his path to the majors might be blocked by Carlos Santana. If Chen is forced to move to 1B or 3B, his bat may not be enough to allow him to make the majors.

Pitcher of the Week:

It was a poor week for pitchers overall. Chen-Chang Lee gave up no earned runs, but he walked 2 in 3 innings of work. Week to week evaluations of pitchers are often tough since they make very few appearances. One bad outing can make a whole week seem terrible while one good start can mask deficiencies from previous weeks. It's a matter of sample size and this week pitchers had a dose of bad luck.

Futures game selection?

Futures Game rosters are just around the corner so I thought we'd take a look at which Taiwanese player is most likely to make the team. The Futures Game is the first chance many of us get to see top prospects play on television. The current format is United States vs. World and since MLB is interested in showcasing its diversity it is almost guaranteed that at least one Taiwanese player will make the roster. The last four Taiwanese to make the roster were Yung-Chi Chen, Chin-Lung Hu, Che-Hsuan Lin, and Chia-Jen Lo. The current top 3 candidates are in order of likelihood:

Hot player: Chun-Hsiu Chen
With another monster week (.444/.524/.778) Chen's season line currently sits at .345/.410/.586. He should expect to be promoted to high A soon. For someone who started the season off the Indians' top 30 prospects list, he's definitely earned consideration as one of their best prospects.
